Pictures are a great way to communicate and make it much easier for students to understand.
Word banks, sentence frames, multiple choice, working with a partner, and pictures sorts are all great tools you can use to make work more accessible to newcomers.
I put my students' countries' flags up around my classroom to represent their diversity. My students enjoyed seeing the different flags and knowing that their backgrounds were valued.
When students arrive in the U.S. they may be in a silent period and it is important that we do not force them to speak, instead encourage students to answer your questions in other ways. Some ways I do this is by having students point to their answer, use nonverbal cues (thumbs up/down, etc.), answer in their own language, or whisper the answer to myself or a partner.
